Health officials are warning children and their parents of the potential dangers that trampolines pose. During one six-month period, 40 children (55 percent of whom were girls) sustained injuries that required medical treatment. Most of the injuries occurred as a result of failed landings following simple jumps, attempts at somersaults/flips, or landing awkwardly on something on the trampoline (such as the protective padding designed to prevent falls through the spring mechanisms). In other cases, injured resulted from children of different sizes using the trampoline at the same time. In these circumstanced, the higher the energy from the larger bouncer was transferred to the smaller bouncer, which resulted in a mistimed landing or projection to an unexpected height or distance.
This week’s Words of Wellness if dedicated to providing some information as to why a trampoline may not always be the safest choice for children. However, a good choice for all ages is chiropractic care – it works, its safe, and it saves time and money. We treat the causes of physical problems rather than just the symptoms. We’re located at 200 Queen St. Southington. We’re currently accepting new patients and invite you to call 860-621-2225 to schedule your appointment.
P.S. More than half of the trampoline injuries sustained by young children in the study mentioned above caused bruising or sprains (ankles), while a third of the injuries resulted in fractures (elbows and ankles).
